FAQS

Why is your yarn so expensive?

It’s simple – we pay fair prices for the fiber we purchase and work on a very small scale. Our hands are quite literally on this yarn through every step of the process – from fleece to finished product. We truly appreciate that you are considering using our yarns for your project. We think this work is worthy of our time and therefore worthy of the price. We hope you do too!

What should I expect from your yarn?

Our yarns are not perfect! While our goal is the highest quality, we are not a commercial mill. We are a two-person operation working part-time in our shop. You may find slubs, splices, uneven spinning, small knots, other fibers, and/or vegetable matter in our yarns. We work diligently to minimize flaws, but we like to think of these “imperfections” as reminders that your yarn comes from real animals on real farms. In commercial yarns, the wool is purchased in bulk for offensively low prices, harshly scoured, treated with acid to remove VM, and processed with extreme discretion to remove all short or undesirable fibers. It makes for an extremely consistent product. However, farms are not paid a fair price for their wool, unnecessary chemicals are used, and a massive amount of fiber is wasted. Our goals are to pay shepherds as much as we can, minimize processing, and reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. The resulting yarn is deeply connected to the animals who produce it and the shepherds who care for them.

What is a One-Sheep Wonder?

One-Sheep Wonders are Nicole’s passion project. A sucker for beautiful single fleeces found at fiber festivals and small farms, she pays full price to the shepherds who raise these amazing sheep. Each fleece is processed individually with love and intention to showcase its best assets. The yarn from these fleeces is sold as a single unit—one fleece, one batch of yarn, to one person, so that the sheep and its best efforts to create the beautiful wool we spin can be truly appreciated. However, due to the *ahem* voluptuous nature of some breeds and the amount of yarn produced from a single fleece, it may be broken into two or more lots. Because we pay full retail price and due to the time it takes to process a single fleece, the price per skein is significantly higher than our other yarns. We hope you find these truly unique skeins as precious as we do, and worthy of your money and the time you will spend creating an heirloom project.
